Reconstruction of Dignāga's Pramāṇasamuccaya together with the Vṛtti

Research:Ernst Steinkellner, Horst Lasic

A complete Sanskrit original of Dignāga's work, which marked the beginning of a vivid and influential tradition of Buddhist epistemology and logic, seems not to have survived. It has only been transmitted in the form of two poor translations found in the Tibetan canon. However, it has now become possible to reconstruct its first part (siddhanta) almost entirely, as well as large parts of the polemical sections, by using materials that have recently become available from the only extant Sanskrit commentary, Jinendrabuddhi's Pramāṇasamuccayaṭīkā, as well as the Tibetan translations, the hitherto known Sanskrit fragments and the earlier efforts of interpreting and regaining this first chapter undertaken by H. Kitagawa, E. Frauwallner, M. Hattori and the Muni Jambuvijayat.

The reconstruction of chapter 1 has been finished by Steinkellner and is available online at the institute’s website. Chapter 2 is being prepared by Horst Lasic. The reconstruction of chapters 3, 4, and 6 are being worked on by Shoryu Katsura, Hiroshima, and that of chapter 5 by Ole H. Pind, Copenhagen.

The Pramāṇasamuccaya in Tibet

Research: Horst Lasic

This project is examining the relatively late reception of the founding text of the epistemological school, the Pramāṇasamuccaya, by Tibetan scholars.
