  • Dr. Marco Ferrante

Ph.D. in South Asian Studies, Marco Ferrante (born 1980) studied Indology at the University of Rome, focusing on Brahmanical philosophical texts, especially dealing with areas such as philosophy of language, metaphysics and epistemology. His doctoral dissertation was dedicated to an analysis and a partial translation of Vṛṣabhadeva’s Sphuṭākṣarā, a commentary on the first chapter of Bhartṛhari’s Vākyapadīya (5th c. CE), perhaps the most influential work on linguistics in classical India. Marco Ferrante has been working at the institute since November 2013. He was involved in the project “Language and action in early Brahmanical Philosophy”, led by Vincent Eltschinger and conceived by Hugo David. The project revolved around the figure and the work of Maṇḍana Miśra (660-720). In particular it aimed at producing an annotated translation of Maṇḍana’s Vidhiviveka, together with an in-depth analysis of several portions of Vācaspati Miśra’s commentary on it (Nyāyakaṇikā, 10th c. CE). Since August 2015 he is working on a new project focused on the influence of earlier Brahmanical and Buddhist philosophies on the Pratyabhijñā school of Kashmir, with particular reference to metaphysical and epistemological issues.
