Venue: 2nd floor, room 2.25, Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia
Hollandstraße 11-13, 1020 Vienna
Organisation: Serena Saccone

Topic

The Sāramañjarī of Samantabhadra (ca. mid-9th c. CE) is a commentary on Jñānapāda's Samantabhadrasādhana (ca. late 8th c. CE), a practical meditation manual of the Guhyasamājatantra. The text survives in some form in at least three recensions. The passages we will read are from the longest recension, which survives in a mid-11th c. manuscript from the Pāla Empire. While most of the work deals with tantric material, there is a long philosophical excursus borrowing extensively from the topics and argumentations belonging to the Buddhist tradition of logic and epistemology (pramāṇa). Arguably, these passages directly influenced authors such as Jitāri and Mokṣākaragupta. During the workshop, led by Serena Saccone and Péter-Dániel Szántó, we will be reading the section refuting the concept of the self (ātman) as well as the section refuting the true reality of cognitions (vijñāna) from his working edition.

Péter-Dániel Szántó started his studies at ELTE Budapest (Diploma in Tibetan Studies and Indology). He wrote his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Alexis Sanderson in Oxford (defended in 2012). Since then he has been Junior Research Fellow at Merton College Oxford, a Nachwuchsinitiative-Stipendiat at Hamburg University, and a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. In the winter semester of 2018, he was a Numata Visiting Professor at the University of Leiden. His primary interest is the literature and history of Indian Esoteric Buddhism.
