What is the sentence meaning? Prabhākara's theory and Śālikanātha's reinterpretations and innovations

Time: Mo.-Fr., 4.-8. Juni 2018 09:00-17:00
Venue: Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia, seminar room 2.25, 2nd floor
Hollandstraße 11-13, 1020 Vienna
Organisation: Elisa Freschi

During the workshop, we will translate and analyse the section dedicated to the sentence meaning of Prabhākara's (7th c.?) Bṛhatī and then compare it with Śālikanātha's discussion of the same topic in his Vākyārthamātṛkā, book 1, starting from v. 12 (p. 401 of the 1961 edition). This workshop is part of the research project on Mīmāṃsā and philosophy of language.

Preliminary program:

Day 1 and 2: beginning of Bṛhatī on Mīmāṃsā Sūtra 1.1.25, along with Śālikanātha's Ṛjuvimalā thereon (Madras pp. 382--386, roughly corresponding to VM 1). Key question: How much of Śālikanātha's anvitābhidhāna theory for sentence signification is already there in the Bṛhatī?

Day 3: Vākyārthamātṛkā, book 1, commentary on v. 12 (pp. 401--405). Key questions: What is the role of memory? In the afternoon (p. 405): Who introduced the idea of lakṣaṇā in regard to Kumārila's theory? Was it Śālikanātha?

Day 4: Vākyārthamātṛkā, book 1, Benares edition pp. 406--410. Key question: Do nyāyas act within the anvitābhidhāna process?

Day 5: Vākyārthamātṛkā, book 1, Benares edition, pp. 410--414. Key questions: Why the whole discussion on anvita vs anvaya? How do ākāṅkṣā, yogyatā and sannidhi differ in the Bhāṭṭa and in the Prābhākara view?
