Phonemes as Meaning-bearers in Kumārila, Jayanta, Vācaspati (workshop with Akane Saito)

Time: Mo. 23.--Wed. 25. November, 10:00-18:00
Venue: Institut für Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte Asiens, Seminarraum 1
Apostelgasse 23, 1030 Wien
Organisation: Elisa Freschi (IKGA)

Topic

The workshop will focus on the problem of whether phonems (not padas) can convey the meaning.

It will consist of a comparative reading of portions of the Ślokavārttika Vākyādhikaraṇa, of the Nyāyamañjarī (portions of book 5 and 6), of the so-called Prakaraṇapañcikā and of the Tattvabindu. We will start the first from v.110 (to v.115 or v.122). Here Kumārila responds to the opponent's idea that it is the phonemes that convey the meaning of a sentence. The corresponding discussion in the Tattvabindu is the so-called "criticism of the Varṇamālāvāda" on pp.83-90 of the 1990 edition. That in the Prakaraṇapañcikā is at the beginning of the eleventh chapter, pp.377-379 of the Benares edition). As for the Nyāyamañjarī, the corresponding parts are in NM 6.1. The next section regards ŚV vākya 122--136, to be compared to further sections in NM 6.1.
