This symposium is taking place in conjunction with Anne Cheng's lecture “Is Confucius a Chinese Philosopher?”, being held on 15 May 2018 under the auspices of an agreement between the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Collège de France.

The aim of this informal symposium is to further deepen and broaden reflections on the place of philosophy in the history of Asian Studies, with a focus on the history of Indian and Chinese Studies.

Roland Lardinois (Centre national de la recherche scientifique/Paris) and Olga Lomová (Charles University/Prague) will initiate the discussion with brief presentations on the following topics:

  • Roland Lardinois: “Philology, philosophy and history in the field of Indian Studies in France 19th-20th centuries”.
  • Olga Lomová: "China discovered through philosophy: new paths, or blind alleys?"

The symposium is open to the public. Please register your participation by 14 May 2018 with an email to cynthia.peck-kubaczek@oeaw.ac.at.
