The most recent developments in the analysis of the original Sanskrit manuscripts from the 8th to the 12th centuries CE, which can still be found in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in the People's Republic of China, make it possible to directly access numerous philosophical and religious texts of Buddhism. Up until now, these texts were only available to scholars in translations or not at all and now, without a doubt, will bring about a crucial shift of emphasis in the aims of the academic field. Due to a contract signed in January 2004, the IKGA has access to photocopies of the manuscripts in the China Tibetology Research Center (CTRC) in Beijing. In the medium term, the pressing duty of the institute will be to analyze the most important Sanskrit texts in this collection, which up until now have only been available in their Tibetan and Chinese translations, in the form of critical editions.

Whereas the studies of the epistemologic-logical tradition of Buddhism focus on critical editions, historical studies, translations, analyses, and systematic interpretations, the main duty of the studies of texts of the other traditions will be to make the first critical edition available to the academic community.

The results of these studies will be published in the series STTAR. Additionally, an online catalogue of the Sanskrit manuscripts will be prepared in the TAR.
