Birgit Kellner serves as Director of the IKGA since December 2015. She holds an MA (Mag. phil.) in Tibetan and Buddhist Studies from the University of Vienna (Austria) and a PhD in Indian Philosophy from the University of Hiroshima (Japan). She studied primarily with Ernst Steinkellner and KATSURA Shoryu. Her area of specialization is contents and methods of philosophical analysis within Indian and Tibetan Buddhism.

After completing her PhD in 1999, Birgit Kellner conducted various independent research projects at the universities of Vienna and Hamburg, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 2008 she was Visiting Assistant Professor in Buddhist Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. Shortly after being promoted to tenure at the University of Vienna in 2009, she took up the position of Professor in Buddhist Studies (full professor) at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” of the University of Heidelberg in April 2010. In 2014 she was elected Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which she then joined as researcher at, and director of, the IKGA in 2015. The University of Heidelberg subsequently awarded her an honorary professorship.

Birgit Kellner is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, board member of the International Association of Buddhist Studies, and, in Vienna, member of CIRDIS, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Documentation of Inner and South Asian Cultural History at the University of Vienna. She serves on editorial and advisory boards of renowned publication series in her field as well as in interdisciplinary contexts, and has acted as expert reviewer for, among others, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Research Foundation DFG, the Union of German Academies of Science, and the Swiss National Science Foundation SNF.

Birgit Kellner was elected member of the DFG Fachkollegium 106 "Außereuropäische Sprachen und Kulturen, Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie, Judaistik und Religionswissenschaft", for the period 2016-2019.
